Healing After the Baby: Beyond the 6-Week Postpartum Check

Healing After the Baby: Beyond the 6-Week Postpartum Check

A Nervous System-Based Look at Postpartum Recovery

You had the baby.
You did the “right” things.
You went to your 6-week checkup. You were told “everything looks fine.”
Maybe you even got cleared to return to exercise, work, or intimacy.

And yet…

You don’t feel fine.

You still feel exhausted.
Your body feels like it’s not your own.
Your emotions are all over the place.
You feel wired, foggy, maybe even disconnected, from yourself, your body, or the people you love.

This isn’t failure.
This is the unspoken truth of postpartum: healing takes more than six weeks.
Especially for your nervous system.

Postpartum Healing Isn’t Just Physical, It’s Neurological

Most postpartum care focuses on the mechanics of healing:
Bleeding, stitches, organs returning to place, hormones shifting.

But what about:

  • The overwhelm that hits out of nowhere

  • The tears that come at 2 a.m. for no reason

  • The hypervigilance that won’t let you rest

  • The way your body feels “stuck on” all the time

  • The quiet voice that says, “Something feels off, but I can’t explain it”

That’s not just hormones.
That’s your
nervous system still processing everything it’s just been through.

What Happens to Your Nervous System During Birth (and After)

Whether your birth was smooth or traumatic, vaginal or surgical, medicated or unmedicated, your nervous system went through something profound.

Birth is a whole-body experience, but especially a neurological one:

  • Your autonomic nervous system is activated during labor

  • Your vagus nerve plays a role in calming and bonding

  • Your body is flooded with stress hormones, and then oxytocin (if all goes well)

  • Your brain literally rewires itself in the early weeks of motherhood

Now add in:

  • Lack of sleep

  • Breastfeeding or pumping stress

  • Physical healing

  • Constant caretaking

  • Emotional swings

  • Little or no support

And it’s no wonder your system stays on edge.
Postpartum dysregulation is real, and rarely talked about.

Common Signs of Nervous System Dysregulation in Postpartum Women

In my practice, I see so many mothers who are weeks, months, even years postpartum and still struggling, not because they’re doing anything wrong, but because their nervous system never had a chance to fully come down from survival mode.

These are some of the most common signs:

  • Hypervigilance (startling easily, always “on”)

  • Anxiety or intrusive thoughts

  • Low-level depression or emotional numbness

  • Sleep disturbances even when baby sleeps

  • Tension or pain in the neck, shoulders, jaw, or low back

  • Digestive issues or hormonal irregularities

  • Disconnection from the body or sexuality

  • Deep fatigue that doesn’t lift with rest

These aren’t failures. They’re physiological signs that your body needs a different kind of care, care that includes the nervous system.

Why “Just Rest More” Isn’t Always Enough

Yes, postpartum women need more sleep.
Yes, more help and better policies are essential.

But rest is only restorative when the nervous system feels safe.

If your body is stuck in fight-or-flight or freeze, even lying down won't help. You’ll still feel “tired but wired.” You may even feel restless or edgy when you finally get a moment to yourself.

This is why I talk to postpartum women about regulation, not just recovery.

Nervous System-Informed Postpartum Care

At Family First Chiropractic, we offer gentle, regulation-focused care designed for women in the postpartum period (whether you’re 6 weeks or 6 years out).

We don’t just adjust the spine.
We help your
whole nervous system shift from high-alert to deep healing.

That means:

  • Using gentle techniques to reduce stored stress in the spine and fascia

  • Supporting the vagus nerve (your body’s rest-and-digest switch)

  • Helping your brain and body reconnect after birth trauma

  • Creating a calm, grounded space where you can exhale

  • Offering holistic tools to support nervous system health at home

Postpartum healing doesn’t happen on a clock.
It happens when your body feels
safe, supported, and seen.

Why This Matters, Long After the 6-Week Visit

Too often, I meet women who are:

  • Still dealing with birth trauma years later

  • Struggling with intimacy or pelvic pain

  • Feeling emotionally flat or overreactive

  • Disconnected from their body or their sense of self

  • Dismissing their pain because “they should be over it by now”

But here’s the truth:

🟡 Your body is not on a deadline.
🟡
You don’t need to bounce back.
🟡
You deserve care that honors what you’ve been through, and what you’re still carrying.

What Real Postpartum Healing Looks Like

It’s not just physical.

Real healing means:

  • Feeling at home in your body again

  • Releasing trauma, stored in your fascia, muscles, and nervous system

  • Learning to trust your body after the intensity of birth

  • Feeling emotionally steady again

  • Sleeping more deeply, even if it’s less

  • Connecting with your child from a place of regulated presence, not survival mode

You deserve that.
And it’s not too late.

Final Thought: You’re Not Behind

If you’re reading this with tears in your eyes, wondering why no one told you this sooner, please know:

You’re not broken.
You’re not behind.
You’re not failing.

You’re just under-supported in a system that rushes postpartum.

Let’s change that, one woman, one nervous system, one healing breath at a time.
