Is Your Body Stuck in Fight-or-Flight? Here’s How to Know
A guide for women navigating chronic stress, tension, and dysregulation.
You’re doing all the right things…
You eat well.
You try to rest.
You exercise, journal, maybe even meditate.
But despite your best efforts, your body still feels tense. Your mind still races. You wake up exhausted. You overreact to small things. You feel wired… but depleted.
If this sounds familiar, your nervous system may be stuck in fight-or-flight mode, a chronic state of physiological stress that your body can’t seem to exit.
And if that’s true, no amount of sleep, supplements, or stretching will fully fix the problem.
Let’s talk about what this really means, and what you can do about it.
What Is Fight-or-Flight, Really?
“Fight-or-flight” is the common term for your sympathetic nervous system response. It’s your body’s ancient survival mechanism, designed to protect you from danger.
When your brain detects a threat, your body reacts immediately:
Your heart rate spikes
Your muscles tighten
Your breath becomes shallow
Cortisol and adrenaline flood your system
Digestion slows, and blood flow is diverted to your limbs
It’s brilliant… when the threat is short-lived.
But today’s “threats”, deadlines, health worries, finances, social pressure, overstimulation, rarely stop. And our bodies, wired for survival, don’t realize these are modern stressors.
So instead of shifting back into a state of safety (called rest-and-digest, or the parasympathetic state), your nervous system gets stuck. You stay in hyper-alert mode, long after the stressor has passed.
Signs You Might Be Stuck in Fight-or-Flight
You don’t need a medical diagnosis to know your body feels off.
Here are some signs I see in practice every day, especially among women in their 30s to 50s:
You wake up tired, even after 7–9 hours of sleep
You overreact to small stressors (like traffic or tech glitches)
Your jaw, shoulders, or low back are always tight
You feel anxious in your body, even when your mind is calm
You crash in the afternoon, or feel wired at night
Your digestion is unreliable (bloating, constipation, reflux)
You feel emotionally “on edge” like one more thing will push you over
Does this resonate?
If so, know this:
You’re not broken. You’re not lazy.
You’re likely experiencing a dysregulated nervous system, and your body is trying to cope.
Why This Happens, Especially to Women
Women today are carrying an invisible load that few people see:
Emotional labor
Caregiving roles
Career stress
Hormonal shifts
Body image pressure
Overstimulation and decision fatigue
Then came the pandemic. Then rising costs. Then the expectation to hold it all together.
You may have survived everything, but your nervous system hasn’t had a chance to exhale.
So it stays on. Hypervigilant. Stuck in sympathetic dominance.
And over time, that takes a toll, not just emotionally, but physically.
That toll is what we call nervous system burnout or chronic dysregulation.
This Is About Regulation, Not Willpower
If you’ve been telling yourself to “just push through” or “try harder,” pause.
This isn’t about trying harder.
It’s about helping your nervous system feel safe again.
And that’s where nervous-system–focused chiropractic can help.
How Nervous System–Informed Chiropractic Can Help
In my practice, we don’t just “crack backs.”
We help the nervous system recalibrate.
Using gentle, evidence-based chiropractic techniques, we work with your spine and soft tissues to:
Release stored tension
Improve brain-body communication
Activate the parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest)
Help your body downshift out of survival mode
This is care that’s not about forcing alignment, it’s about creating safety in the body.

Here’s what my clients often notice as we work together:
Fewer physical symptoms of anxiety
Reduced neck, back, and jaw tension
Calmer digestion and hormonal balance
Increased emotional resilience
When the nervous system remembers how to regulate, everything else starts to shift, too.
You Don’t Need More Hustle. You Need More Regulation.
True healing doesn’t come from doing more.
It comes from doing less, more intentionally.
From creating the right conditions, and letting your body do what it’s designed to do: heal.
If you’re tired of living in a body that feels stuck in overdrive…
If you’re ready to stop managing symptoms and start feeling whole again…
If you want to be seen, heard, and treated as more than a list of pain points…
Let’s talk.
Next Steps
You’re not broken.
You’re just carrying more than a regulated body can hold.
Let’s give your nervous system the support it needs to heal.
