Colic, Ear Infections, and Sleep Issues in Babies, Is the Nervous System the Missing Link?
A Pediatric Chiropractic Perspective on Supporting Early Development
Most new parents expect some sleepless nights, occasional fussiness, or a few sniffles during infancy. But when your baby cries for hours without relief, battles chronic ear infections, or can’t seem to settle into sleep no matter what you try, it becomes more than exhausting. It becomes heartbreaking.
And often, the medical answers you’re given are vague at best:
“They’ll grow out of it.”
“Try changing formula.”
“Let’s watch and wait.”
But what if there’s something deeper going on, something often missed in traditional pediatric care?
As a pediatric chiropractor with over 25 years of experience supporting families, I’ve found that many of these early-life issues share one surprising but powerful root:
A dysregulated or stressed nervous system.
Let’s dive into what this means, why it happens, and how a gentle, holistic approach can make all the difference for your baby.
What Do Colic, Ear Infections, and Sleep Problems Have in Common?
On the surface, these issues seem unrelated.
Colic is a digestive mystery
Ear infections are often seen as immune or structural
Sleep challenges are written off as “normal” for infants
But in many cases, they’re all connected by one central system in the body:
The nervous system, the communication hub between the brain and body, responsible for everything from digestion and immune function to stress response and sleep regulation.
In babies, the nervous system is still developing, and it can become easily overwhelmed. Factors that can contribute include:
A stressful or fast birth
C-section delivery or forceps/vacuum assistance
Tightness or misalignment in the neck or cranial bones
Chemical or environmental sensitivities
Digestive immaturity
Maternal stress or trauma during pregnancy or postpartum
All of this can cause the baby’s body to hold tension, even in utero or right after birth, which interferes with their ability to rest, digest, and regulate.

A Closer Look at the Big Three
1. Colic: More Than Just “A Fussy Baby”
Colic is typically defined as excessive crying in an otherwise healthy baby, lasting more than 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week, for 3 weeks or more.
But in reality, colic is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
It tells us something in your baby’s system is out of balance.
Babies with colic may be experiencing:
Digestive discomfort (gas, reflux, tension in the gut)
Overstimulation from sensory input they can’t yet process
Birth trauma that created tension in the spine, skull, or fascia
Vagus nerve dysfunction, affecting their ability to calm and self-soothe
Chiropractic Insight:
Gentle cranial and spinal adjustments can help release this stored tension and support the vagus nerve, improving digestion, reducing discomfort, and helping your baby settle.
2. Recurrent Ear Infections: When Fluid Doesn’t Drain
If your baby has had multiple ear infections, you’ve likely heard about antibiotics, tubes, or “waiting it out.” But here’s what often gets missed:
In babies, the eustachian tubes, which drain fluid from the middle ear, are short and lie more horizontally than in adults. If there’s misalignment or muscular tension in the upper cervical spine or jaw, these tubes don’t drain effectively.
This stagnation creates the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, especially after a cold or teething phase.
Chiropractic Insight:
When we gently adjust the upper neck and surrounding areas, we reduce pressure around the ears and improve lymphatic drainage, naturally helping the body clear fluid and reducing the recurrence of infections without medication.
3. Sleep Issues: Is Their Body Stuck in Survival Mode?
Sleep difficulties in babies, like waking frequently, needing to be held to sleep, or trouble settling, may not just be behavioral. They may be neurological.
A baby whose nervous system is stuck in “high alert” (sympathetic dominance) has a hard time shifting into rest and digest mode (parasympathetic). This makes falling asleep and staying asleep extremely difficult.
Common signs of nervous system-related sleep issues:
Arching during sleep
Startling awake frequently
Only sleeping upright or on you
Short 20–40 minute naps
Light, restless sleep patterns
Chiropractic Insight:
By supporting the parasympathetic system through gentle chiropractic care, we help babies shift into a more relaxed state, which improves their ability to sleep longer and deeper.
How the Nervous System Affects Everything
The autonomic nervous system governs vital functions like breathing, digestion, immune response, and muscle tone. It has two branches:
Sympathetic (“fight or flight”)
Parasympathetic (“rest and digest”)
For babies, we want to encourage a healthy parasympathetic tone, so their body knows it’s safe to grow, eat, sleep, and heal.
When babies stay stuck in sympathetic overdrive, we may see:
Frequent crying or fussiness
Slow weight gain or feeding challenges
Sleep disruptions
Chronic congestion or reflux
Constipation or gassiness
Increased susceptibility to illness
What Does a Pediatric Chiropractic Visit Look Like?
Let’s be clear:
This is not “cracking backs” for babies.
At Family First Chiropractic, we use techniques specifically designed for infants:
Light fingertip pressure (no more than you'd use to test a ripe tomato)
Gentle cranial work to release birth-related tension
Tailored care based on your baby’s individual presentation
Most babies enjoy the sessions, and many parents report that their baby:
Falls asleep during the adjustment
Feeds more effectively afterward
Has improved digestion, mood, and sleep within a few sessions
Dr. Christine is certified in pediatric and prenatal chiropractic (CACCP) through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and has supported hundreds of families through gentle, respectful care.
You Know Your Baby Best
If you feel something is “off”, even if others dismiss your concerns, you are allowed to explore holistic care.
Symptoms like colic, reflux, ear infections, or poor sleep are your baby’s way of communicating that their system is out of balance.
Through nervous-system-based chiropractic care, we can gently help your baby feel more regulated, more comfortable, and more at ease in their growing body.
Real Words from Parents in Our Practice:
“After just two visits, our baby was sleeping for longer stretches and seemed so much calmer. Dr. Christine gave us hope when we were beyond exhausted.”
“The difference was noticeable, he wasn’t arching or gassy anymore, and he finally seemed comfortable in his body.”
